To Double Cleanse or not to Double Cleanse (with tutorial!)

If you haven’t added the double cleanse into your routine yet, you are truly missing out. I have noticed the rising popularity of double cleansing with the numerous new cleansing balms and oils hitting the market. I definitely think there is confusion surrounding what double cleansing is, why you should do it at home, and what products to use! I have some quick read info below as well as a helpful tutorial to follow so you can incorporate double cleansing into your nighttime skincare routine ASAP!

What is Double Cleansing?

This technique became popular in Japan and South Korea. With the 10 step Korean skin care regimen trending now in North America, we are seeing double cleansing becoming more mainstream. As a professional in the spa, I would always perform this process as the first two steps in my facials but didn’t always do it at home! If I do it during facials, then why don’t I do it before applying my serums and other skincare? SOOO I started and wont stop, even though my cleansing oil collection may need me to relax a bit. Overall, double cleansing allows for proper penetration of your skincare serums and creams, as well as helping to prevent build up in the pores.

Step 1: Use an Oil-Based Cleanser

First, choose your oil based cleansing option. This can be in a balm form or a bottle with a pump. No matter your skin type, this is super beneficial at cleaning the skin fully of makeup, sunscreen, and dirt BEFORE cleansing with your everyday cleanser. It may feel a bit heavy at first depending on your skin type, but just be sure to pick one that doesn’t clog the pores. PUT DOWN the coconut oil. I mean it!

You will apply either the balm or oil using dry hands on a dry face, and work in for a few seconds. Get your hands wet and emulsify the oil for a bit longer to really break up that layer of product on your face.

Step 2: Use a Water-Based Cleanser

Second, choose a water based cleanser. This is your typical, everyday cleanser. Sometimes the cleansing balm leaves a slight film which is easily cleansed away with this step. I always recommend a gentle cleanser that leaves the skin feeling clean but not stripped. Be sure to gently apply the cleanser and work in for 30-60 seconds.
