Hi everyone! I am so happy to be posting again after a long month away. I’ve been busy at work and a new schedule has caused me to lose my writing routine. Dont worry- I’m back and have so many topics to discuss in 2020!
For today, we are discussing brows. Do you love your brows? Do you have to fill them in every day? Do you have them microbladed? Have they been the same shape since 1990?
Let’s talk about it all.
Here’s my brow story…
10 years ago. I know the quality sucks because it was taken on a digital camera in a not well lit room… but look at those pencil thin brows!
Fast forward 5 years and I kind of learned how to start using brow powder. Way too thin on the tails and spaced rather far apart though.
And here’s me now! 5 more years later. After going to aesthetics school, alot of will power to not over pluck, and some brow pencil to help darken them up but still look natural…I think I found my ideal shape.
Brow trends have seriously changed over the years and there’s no doubt they will change again. I always tell people to not follow the trend if you dont want to! Do what you like for your face, however, realize there may be consequences.
Waxing destroys the follicle over time, resulting in less hair growth. If you have been waxing for years and years, the hair will not grow as much and eventually may even stop! Age also plays a factor, as we often grow less hair as we get older.
A current trend I’m seeing alot is people shaving the tails of their brow so they can make them straighter, or shaving them completely off to draw whatever shape and thickness they desire. This will not affect the hair growth as shaving only removes hair from the surface of the skin. The downside of this is you will have to deal with some stubbly hairs while they grow back, but it is harmless!
Remember: plucking is the same as waxing.
Plucking removes the hair from the follicle, but does it one by one, as opposed to multiple hairs with waxing.
At work, I wax plenty of brows. I hear alot of, ” I want them to be fuller! Dont take too much off”. Or the famous, “can you give me a high arch, mine are so straight?”. Ma’am, there’s no hair there to arch…
Brows are a delicate thing and an art! Your brow stylist has a mapping technique that they use in order to properly decide exact length and where to begin the arch of a brow. You don’t have to follow this if you so choose, but this what would be most suited based on your facial features.
Scenario 1) You grow brow hair, but you pluck them at home. You want a fuller, bushier style that also looks clean.
Step one… and I cannot say this loud enough…put down the tweezers. Throw them away. Along with the magnified mirror! When you’re growing your brows, unfortunately they do not grow in a perfect pattern. You will get random hairs all over the place. It is vital that you don’t pluck any, no matter how crazy it may seem. Go see a brow artist, who can clean up the shape while leaving all of the necessary hairs that will fill in over time.
Brows take a long time to grow.
This is a commitment. They dont grow overnight! It can take several months to a year before you even begin to see the shape you are wanting. But if you see a professional during that time, you dont have to deal with too much mess.
Scenario 2) You grow brow hair, and you are willing to put in extra money into the growing out process.
Following the same steps above, you can also incorporate a brow growth serum to your daily routine. There is also a more natural route where you can use castor oil (this can also be applied to lashes). Consistency is key!
You can also use makeup products to draw new shapes, fill in, and darken brows. They sell so many types from powders to pencils and pomades! There are plenty of tutorials online that can help, or they can assist in teaching you by going to a local brow artist or makeup artist.
Scenario 3) Your brow hair doesn’t grow other than a few strays. You’ve had the same shape for a long time.
If you already notice that you never really pluck or have to get them shaped professionally, you may need to put in more work/money with the brows.
- Microblading- tattooing semi-permanent ink into the brow and brow area. There are different options as far as style and finish (powder, ombre)
- Henna brow- brow tint that stains skin which allows for a new shape/thickness to be created
- Brow tint- tints the hair only
Its important to remember that microblading lasts much longer than the other options. It can last 1-3 years, with touch ups being required. Henna brows and brown tinting last around 4 weeks, depending on skin care routine and skin type.
If you need a new shape, you would opt for microblading or henna brow. If you just want them more noticeable, then a brow tint will do just fine. Price is definitely a factor with these options as microblading services averaging around $400, and tinting services anywhere from $25-$75. It highly depends on your area, look around for clean, and well reviewed places!
As always, if you dont know where to begin or what you want…see a professional! Go to someone who specializes in brow artistry. They can perform a consult and recommend what service is right for you.
You can have full, bushy brows!
If you’re going the natural route of just growing them, remember it takes time. I personally had over-plucked brows from high school and then dealt with a horrendous waxing situation not long after. It eventually took me over a year to get my brows full and natural. I do monthly waxing and trimming but I almost never pluck!
Brows are a big part of our face so take care of them and shape them how you want.
