How’s your Summer been? I have been spending quite a bit of time inside this year. Thanks to my Vitamin D supplement, I don’t really miss the sun much (more of a Winter time gal). However, when I do venture out, I always keep my skin as protected as possible. Using spf makeup on top of sunscreen is a great way to secure your UV protection. Here is my full sunscreen makeup routine using all spf makeup products for a quick, natural look all year round!
SPF Makeup 2021
First off, as long as you are wearing your sunscreen under your makeup every day, your makeup products do not need to contain sunscreen. And on the flip side, just because your makeup contains sunscreen doesn’t mean you don’t need a layer of sunscreen first. BUT…it’s also nice to add the extra protection on top! Most makeup products come in formulas that include some factor of sunscreen. I especially recommend checking out K beauty sites such a yesstyle or sokoglam for affordable options.
My Sunscreen Makeup Routine
I have used a fair share of spf makeup products and it can be hard to find good formulas. It is also a major point worth noting that they simply do not extend shade ranges to work for medium-dark skin tones. Why do brands still do this and assume that darker skin tones don’t want to protect their skin from the sun?? Nevertheless, I have been able to find some absolute gems that are affordable and easy to use for makeup beginners too! Note- many of the products with extended shade ranges I have linked towards the end 🙂
Favorite sunscreens to wear under makeup:
Super Goop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40, $34
La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 60, $30
Garnier Canna-B Pore Perfecting Serum Cream SPF 30, $16-$20
For my base, I love the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 for a natural finish. This also does provide coverage and can be built up! It is hard to find tinted moisturizers with coverage, and this one actually feels more like makeup than just a sheer liquid.
- Tip: this one can be applied with either a brush, sponge or your fingers. I find the best coverage comes from using a brush. If you want it more sheer definitely go for your fingers or a damp sponge!
I am so excited to rave about my newest concealer obsession: The Saem Mineralizing Creamy Concealer SPF 30. Guys, it is seriously amazing. I have not used many concealers with spf, so I didn’t have high expectations. I have been using this daily for over a month and can’t get enough.
- Tip: you only need a few dots of this under the eyes to get some great coverage. I like using a brush, but it also works well with a damp sponge or fingers.
As far as blush goes, there is a J beauty product that I picked up recently. I have been wanting to try the brand Canmake because I see their sunscreen all over my instagram. I chose their Lip & Cheek Gel in the shade 02 Apple Mango Parfait and OMG, it’s so cute! Super compact and easy to carry around. It does provide SPF 24 as well.
- Tip: these are very creamy and a little goes a long way! I prefer using this on the cheeks over the lips, but the formula is nice either way.
Finding a good makeup powder with spf is quite a difficult process. They really are perfect for reapplying sunscreen over your makeup throughout the day- but many brands just don’t get the formula and packaging right. My favorite that I have found is the Derma-E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30. This does have a tint to it.
- The brush applicator on this can be tricky. I always shake it and dust on my hand a bit for the product to start dispensing. You can also unscrew the bottom and place the powder in a different container if you don’t care for the travel aspect.
Lip balms with SPF are an easier makeup product to come by. However, I have disliked most of the formulas that I have tried. I’ve especially disliked the cult favorite Sun Bum ones as they leave a really bad taste in my mouth! I ordered from a popular J beauty brand, Rhoto Mentholatum and got two different balms: the Melty Cream Lip SPF 25 in Matcha and Water Lip SPF 20 in Mint.
- The formula on these are amazing! You can’t taste any sunscreen and they are a both super creamy. If you like matcha, then you NEED the melty cream lip. They both come in other scents to check out as well! I prefer the melty lip for a glossier finish, but the water lip is perfect as an everyday lip balm.
I currently don’t own an spf makeup setting spray, but I have to mention them because it is another way to reapply your sunscreen and keep your makeup lasting! I don’t really use setting sprays all that often anymore, but they are really a great option for a busy schedule or just a day in the sun.
